Kia whāngaia te rito, ka puāwaitia te harakeke.

The wellbeing of our children, whānau and communities are closely interconnected.

Welcome to Child Rich Communities!

Imagine if our communities throughout Aotearoa were places in which children and rangatahi had an equal voice, felt valued and safe. Where play, design, activities, social services and policy all responded to what children and youth said was needed.

Our communities would feel like rich places to be for tamariki or rangatahi. The rest of the whānau and community would thrive.

For Child Rich Communities the well-known whakataukī (proverb) quoted above reflects our core belief that when we nurture our tamariki (our greatest treasure), our whānau and community will blossom.

What is and who are Child Rich Communities?

Child Rich Communities include people and communities across Aotearoa who are bringing change at a grassroots level for tamariki, rangatahi and whānau. Through Child Rich Community, we exchange information and stories, and in doing so, strengthen this way of working for the benefit of our mokopuna.

Each time we kōrero we are reminded that children are our taonga and we must make change with and for them in our communities.

Child Rich Communities also includes all those people working throughout Aotearoa - delivering social services, making policy and strategy and enabling systems change.

Together we can all learn how to create Child Rich Communities and support the changes on all levels, that are needed for our mokopuna to thrive.

Stories of local leadership offer learnings for us all by showing us what’s possible when we work together. These stories give us the pathway of how to respond to community and tamariki needs and remind us that we have the power to make a difference for tamariki and rangatahi in their communites.
